Jitiya Pawani

About the Festival

Jitiya Pawani is a significant festival celebrated by the Tharu women for three days. Typically held in September, this festival is dedicated to worshipping the god Jitbahan. The name Jitbahan is derived from the combination of the words “Jit,” meaning victory, and “Bahan,” meaning vehicle. During the festival, Tharu women observe a fast and immerse themselves in rivers nearby their villages. They don new attire, particularly in white and black colors, and engage in traditional dances performed in circular motions. In the evening, all women gather at the residence of the landlord (Jamindar) to listen to the tales of the Jitbahan deity and partake in a fruit feast. The fasting undertaken during the festival is believed to bring joy and blessings to the family.
